ARTISTS & MODELS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Amsterdam

What's the purpose of Bodypainting Day?

To promote free artistic expression, body acceptance and connecting with the public through art.

Do models need to be nude?

Yes, all models will be painted full nude. Bodypainting Day is about celebrating the human body without shame.
It shows that nudity doesn't always mean sex. It also shows just how diverse bodies really are. We are all unique and perfect in our imperfections.

Is there anything I need to know about painting as part of a group?

With so many models, your work will often be seen at a distance. Detail work is great, but it's a good idea to use bold lines and colors.

Is there an award for the best painting?

No. This is not a competition in any way. It's about artists sharing their creativity and their ideas and models sharing their bodies to help give these ideas life.

What should I paint for the theme "What the World Needs Now..." ?

The theme is intentionally vague. It does NOT need to be taken literally. It can be as simple as an expression of something positive. Bodypainting Day is more than a display of artistic skill. It is a statement that art is for everyone to see and share and that the human body can be a powerful canvas for art.

Artists can paint whatever they feel speaks to the theme, including abstractions. We do NOT need to articulate how the art meets the theme. The art speaks for itself.

Are there any age restrictions?

For the public to watch, there is no age limit. All artists and models must be at least 18 years old.

Can we use airbrush?

No, Kryolan has donated all of the paint, which comes in cake form. Artists need to bring their own brushes.

Can we use our own paints?

No, we will all be using the paints that Kryolan has donated. This way all of the paintings look great alone as well as together as a group.

What about things like headdresses, fake nails, etc?

Sorry, we are just keeping this to the nude body and paint

What if someone is being creepy?

The vast majority of spectators will be behaving themselves properly. That being said, there are occasions when someone might say or do something that can make our models uncomfortable. If for any reason you feel uncomfortable, please let one of our staff know right away and we'll take care of it.

Staff will be wearing colored Bodypainting Day T-shirts.

Are you sure that this is legal? What happens if police or security question me?

This is all perfectly legal. We have received a permit from the city and the police have been informed of all activities.
That being said, if anyone such as park security were to ask you any questions, please refer them to event staff.

What do we need to bring with us?

Artists need to bring their own brushes and a towel for their model to stand on (to keep the ground clean).
Models should pack as light as possible. If you have long hair, please bring something to tie your hair up. Please wear comfortable shoes.
Also, please note that artists will at times be responsible for the models' possessions, such as during the march and when photos are being taken. Artists may want to bring a backpack for this. Models should not over-pack. Feel free to coordinate with each other.

What happens if it rains?

There is no rain date, so we are holding the event rain or shine. If it looks like rain, bringing an umbrella could be helpful. The paint will run if it gets wet.
